In ancient times, the Romans broke a thin loaf of wheat over the bride's head at the end of the ceremony. The wheat represented the symbol of fertility, and the crumbs were eagerly sought by the guests as good luck tokens. In England, during the Middle Ages, it was traditional for the bride and groom to kiss over a pi e of small cakes. Finally, when an enterprising baker decided to mass all these cakes together and cover them with frosting, the modern, tiered wedding cake was started.
The cutting of the wedding cake is always a highlight of the reception. It is traditional for the bride and groom to cut the first piece of cake together.
The feeding of a piece of cake to each other is customary but it is optional.
A toast to each other could follow.

Wedding cakes are traditionally tiered and frosted in white, possibly with some pastel touches. However, they can be designed many ways and can be of a variety of fillings.

You should choose someone who has experience in making wedding cakes. Plan to meet with the baker to discuss your color and style preferences. Some bakers have sample books that you can use to select the cake. When you meet with the baker, have in mind the theme of your wedding, the number of guests so your baker can determine the size of your cake and any other baked items you might want.

There are a variety of little ornaments that can go on top of the cake. Some couples have something very special and unique designed just for that.

A good baker will not only make a good looking cake but one that tastes equally as delicious.
