Your flowers are
usually the first thing noticed by your guests as they enter the ceremony area. Some
well-placed flowers will make the most simple area look festive and inviting and add an
element of romance.
Your flowers can be chosen just a few weeks before your wedding. Your florist can advise you on the most appropriate flowers for various uses, and tell you which ones will be most readily available at the time of your wedding. They can show you samples of the various types and shapes of bouquets. They might also suggest some attractive arrangements and color schemes to supplement your own ideas. Because of hothouse growing and air shipping, you can have any flower you like, even out of season ; but for a price.
Roses have long stood for love and are the most popular flower for weddings. White has symbolized purity and is the most popular color for the bride. Ivy, used at early Greek weddings as a sign of indissoluble love, is still used to trim wedding bouquets, although, not now as popular as fern.
Flowers are traditionally carried by the bride and her attendants, and worn as boutonnieres by the groom, his attendants, and the fathers of the bride and the groom and by the grandfathers. The mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom are usually given corsages, although this is no longer mandatory. The bride and her attendants may also wear flowers in their hair.
Flowers may be placed on the altar, used to mark off the church pews. and on the guest book table. Jewish couples are married under a chuppah, a canopy symbolizing their future home, and flowers are frequently used to decorate it. Some chuppahs are constructed entirely of flowers.
The bridal bouquet can be any shape or size and is usually white or pastel. A little color in the bouquet will highlight your flowers from your dress. The flowers carried by your attendants should coordinate with the mood and color of the wedding. Florists who are wedding specialists will know how to coordinate your flowers.
You might think of appointing someone to transport your flowers after the wedding. You might want to use them as additional decorations at your reception, leave some at the church or give them to some friend or relative or charitable organization.
1. After the clothes have been selected, the reception hall has been chosen, the number of tables are known, and the number of people in the wedding party are known, then make arrangements with the florist.
2. The florist probably needs less time for preparation time than almost anyone else involved. However, quality and popular florists may limit the number of weddings they do on a particular day, so check with them and don't be disappointed.
3. Take great care in selecting your flowers. Flowers that are out of season may cost an enormous amount of money.
4. Keep the following in mind if you want any special floral co-ordination:
A. Your reception hall may have a certain decor or color combination that will look better with one type of flower than others.
B. Do you want your groom's flower to match with your bouquet? Also, do you want to match the flowers of the groomsmen with those of the bridesmaids, parents, etc.

7. While it might be convenient for many of the flowers to be delivered to the same place, such as the church, remember you might need your bouquets elsewhere, such as for photographs. Be sure that the flowers which belong to the major members of the wedding party (bride, groom and bridesmaids) are delivered where they will first need them. You might also consider asking a friend to take delivery of the flowers and distribute them, if this is impractical for the florist.
8. It would be a good idea for your florist to know the name of your coordinator and instruct the florist to hand the flowers to no-one but that person - your coordinator can sign for them.
9. If you want to dispose of the flowers in any special way, make arrangements for this prior to your wedding day and be sure someone has agreed to follow through for you.
