Your first shared wedding tradition will probably be your engagement and then wedding rings. The use of rings to signify marriage dates back to the very earliest of times. The earliest rings were made of braided grass and brides once wore rings of hemp, which had to be replaced every year. Early Romans wore more durable iron rings to symbolize the permanence of marriage. Diamond engagement rings first appeared in medieval Italy. This most imperishable and desirable of all stones was chosen as a symbol of everlasting love and devotion. Gold has been favored for its lasting beauty and purity for the wedding rings and unending love has been symbolized by the unbroken circle of the wedding band.

Early in history people believed that the vein in the third finger of the left hand led directly to the heart and the ring has traditionally been placed on this finger.

The English Book of Prayer in 1549 specified the left hand as appropriate for men and women. Since that time, English-speaking people have worn their rings on their left hands. In many western European countries, however, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand. Greek women wear their rings on the left hand until they are married and then transfer them to the other hand.

Many young couples like to design their own rings. Whatever your decision, your jeweler will be able to assist you in your selection of stones and design. A good stone can be an investment as well as the beautiful symbol of enduring love.
